Supplies for Bead Jewelry Making
I’m planning on embarking on a new journey, a journey towards a new hobby. What hobby is that? Bead jewelry making. I have yet to start on it. I don’t even know when I’ll be able to start! But this early, I am already starting to stock up on various supplies. One supply I have stocked up on is lucite beads in shades of orange and red. Why did I choose those colors? Well, I just thought the colors were so rich and vibrant and would definitely add an extra splash of refreshing colors to whatever design I come up with. Actually, the store where I bought the beads had a whole assortment of equally vibrant colors like blue, green, yellow, purple and of course my favorite, pink! Have you ever seen those striped hard candies which are often in red and white? The beads look like that except that they are shaped like a tiny ball. Pretty neat, huh

Beadseller on Internet Search Engines
In mid January 2005, I found Overstock… not by chance mind you. A dear friend of mine had tried for months to talk me into trying Overstock. Beadwitched. Was I being stubborn? Naaa…I had a store on eBay and wanted to finish out the month before I took the leap… besides, eBay’s fees were on the rise and I was on the run. It’s January…. I would love to say that I sell more than I buy, however, that doesn’t seem to be the case. So there I was, sitting on over $20,000 worth of beads and beading supplies selling them at about $2 per pack on Overstock… not taking into consideration the listing fees or the paypal fees….making about 20 cents per pack. WOW…. Talk about a get rich quick scheme! I started listing even more… still not adjusting my prices… that was what people wanted to pay… so either make the nickel or not…. January reaped just over $500 in sales… February jumped to $1,500… March jumped even further… $2,400… April hit an all time $3K in sales….

Beading My Way to Wellness
I choose beads which look and feel good together. It’s important for the jewelry to be comfortable and feel nice, otherwise no one will wear it. The texture factor also helps me identify my beads. Texture is definitely my friend!Get FeedbackOne of the important things to do when learning any new task is to get feedback. I did this by visiting a specialty beading store. As I shopped, I learned about new skills and tools to add to my beading skills toolbox. This sort of fits in with the social aspects of beading, but it’s also important from a learning perspective. You may pay more for the types of beads at a smaller independent shop, but the knowledge you gain is priceless.Shop the SalesIf you’re not sure if beading is something you want to take up, or you need a lot of beads, it’s sometimes worth looking at stores and their sales and coupons. Some craft stores will have 40% off sales and it’s a great way to get beads and supplies.

“That Bead Store”
Hey W.E.S.T! So I heard back from the WECM today and cannot say that I’m overly excited. It would seem as though they feel that openning a retail storefront right away would be a foolish move. Although my feedback from everyone has been extremely positive they are firm that they would not approve me for openning a storefront. So I wanted to ask you all a few questions, and please feel free to contact me via e-mail with your replies. Would you go to a flea market to buy beads on weekends? (Mulvey Flea Market off Osborne ) Would you prefer the forks? How about waiting to buy beads and supplies once or twice a month at craft sales? Would free local shipping or a pickup option be appealing for “online buying” WECM feels that I should focus on e-commerce for the first year and local craft sales before going into getting a retail storefront. And I can’t say I agree.

But before investing too much into containers here are a few tips on buying bead organizers. First let’s determine a few items. What beading supplies are you storing? A few options that you may have are beads, findings, tools, books, catalogs, magazines, findings, bead boards or bead mats, findings, spools of stringing materials such as wire, elastic, leather or silk cord and did I mention findings. The list goes on. You may want to gather your supplies together to see what shapes and dimensions you need to take into consideration when looking for containers. Kid’s Craft Review: ArtTerro Wire and Bead Art Kit
I opened the bag of beads and was satisfied with the color and materials selection. Most were glass, some were wood, and there some plastic ones as well. All had holes large enough to accommodate the wire. Since I was using one kit for two kids, I was a little underwhelmed with the amount of beads provided. My 5 year old LOVES beads and would use the ones provided in a minute! So I admit I dug into my bead stash and pulled out a few more to supplement.

Behind the Bead – Czech Fire-Polished Glass
Today we’re exploring the history of fire-polished Czech glass beads. We’ve touched on the history of Czech glass beads in the past, which you can read in our previous blog post, but today focuses solely on the brightly brilliant fire-polished ones. These cool glass beads get their name from the hot process they go through to become shiny. Let’s start from the beginning. The cottage industry of glass bead making in the Czech Republic dates back as early as the 1500s when hot, softened glass was pressed into special molds to create unique shapes. These produced the pressed Czech glass beads we know today. Our favorite faceted friends were produced by re-firing each bead to give it that extra sparkle. The process fire-polished beads go through is truly amazing. After the melted glass is poured into molds, each bead is given facets using a grinding wheel.

Making something useful out of acrylic scraps
Making something useful out of acrylic scraps From a recent project we ended up with a few hundred scraps of acrylic, mostly in little squares like these. But what to do with all those scraps? We collected them into eight groups and mixed and matched the different pieces until each stack was the same height. (The thickness of cast acrylic tends to vary a bit.) We mostly used the clear pieces but threw in a few bright ones for effect. We ran a bead of acrylic cement down the side of each stack to bond them together, making rigid crystalline blocks. Of course, you needn’t make simple stacks.

Art Every Day Month C Day 29
Iexperimented with polymer clay. The chocolate brown was deeper than I had in mind, so I added transparent gold paint and some green puff paint. It’s not as lightweight as a regular Art Card, but I like it nonetheless. It was a piece I could do while standing in the kitchen as Claire played nearby.
